I’ve spent years working with dogs professionally, but my own journey into dog training started much like many of my clients’ journeys do: I had a difficult dog I loved fiercely, and I needed to learn how to communicate with him.

How to Use Your Clicker Ring

The concept is simple:

1. Click the behavior you want.
The instant your dog does something you’d like to reinforce, press the clicker.

2. Reward your dog.
Follow the click with food, play, or another reward appropriate for your training session.

3. Build from there.
As your dog begins to understand what earns the click, you can shape increasingly complex behaviors one successful repetition at a time.

If you’re new to clicker training, don’t worry about getting everything perfect immediately. Good timing is a skill for the human end of the leash, too—and it gets better with practice.
